Unfinished education

If you haven’t completed your formal studies, they may pose questions similar to the following ones:

10. Why didn’t you continue your formal education?
“In that moment I preferred to work rather than studying.” or “Work absorbed me in such a way that I decided to focus totally on it in that moment.”
Don’t use phrases like: “I didn’t finish my studies because they were providing nothing to me.” Or “You know, a title is not important.” Don’t say either that it is not possible to work and study at the same time because many people have done it and do it nowadays.
Don’t emit value judgments about it. Limit yourself to describe the facts.

11. How were you at school?
Be sincere. If you were not a good student comment it, but with some sadness tone and not like something funny.

12. Did you work during your student period?
Describe your situation, if you didn’t have formal jobs but jobs as a free lance or you helped any of your parents on their professional tasks; this can not be considered a paid job on its total meaning, but it was, maybe, the way you found to help yourself.

13. Do you currently attend or are you planning to any kind of course?
I currently study … at …” If you don’t attend any course: “I haven’t found the time to dedicate it to a course at the moment, but I will do it as soon as I can.”
Or: “I plan to … for the next year.”

14. Do you usually read commercial or professional magazines? Which ones?
Mention the magazines you most frequently read, even when you don’t have a full subscription. Many people exchange magazines and don’t buy all the numbers, so they will be able to save some extra money.
The registered professionals receive the magazines in their professional counseling and they buy a lot of technical and actuality material at the offices.

15. Have you attended professional seminars or conferences in the last two years? Was it on your own?
“Yes, I attended the … in … (month). This course helped me to… and the most interesting thing was …”

16. What are your educational studies in the future?
It is difficult to imagine a person who doesn’t have educational or training objectives, either formal or not. Therefore, one answer could be: “I always have plans that I sometimes fulfill and some others don’t.” Relate this question with the number 7 of the same chapter.
If you have concrete plans this is the time to comment them.

17. Do the averages in your studies reflect your instruction?
If you are a young person who has just finished your studies or you are still studying, this is a pertinent question. If your grades are high, the answer will be easier.
If on the contrary, your grades are not good, one answer could be: “It is true that my grades are not the best, but they don’t represent me, I think that I can be very productive at work.”
If you are an adult person who finished your studies many years ago, your best answer will be to value your achievements at work, putting emphasis on the things you can do, further than the things you learnt in the classrooms.

18. Mention three items you have learnt at the university that can be used in this position.
It will depend in any case; if you prepared for the interview, you could have thought about it in advance. If it is not like that and you can’t think of three items, a good answer could be: “The most important thing the university has taught me in order to perform in my professional life is to solve problems.”

19. What subject did you succeed at in your studies?
Try to think on a subject you like and, at the same time, means something to the employer or that has any relation with the task to be performed.

20. Did you develop any type of extra curricular activity at the university? What kind?
Say that you have made them. In many environments, this is very well seen.

21. Have you ever needed private classes? In what subjects?
“No, I have never needed them” Or: ‘Yes, I took private lessons of… but just for a short time. They helped me a lot at that moment.”

If you would say something about your performance at school, or either if in any way your antecedents would come out, they can ask you:

22. Tell me about your performance at school. Are you happy with it?
I don’t know your case, you could have been a very good student, intermediate or one who had very low grades. On the other hand, an average may mean one thing in one university and some have a completely different interpretation at another.
If you didn’t have good grades at school, you can rehearse an answer like the following: “Unfortunately, I didn’t pay special attention to my grades, now I realize the value they have and focus the professional topics in a different way.”
