Questions: 11-20

11. After making a decision, do you consider it irrevocable?
The comment of the previous question. A possible answer: “Generally, yes, I have modified decisions when it was necessary. But I am a flexible person”. If this is so, have an anecdote at hand.

12. Do you have experience supervising…? (in reference to a highly qualified personnel).
If you have experience: “I have supervised high level professionals in many occasions, specially… It has been very stimulating”.
If you have no experience: “So far, my job hasn’t required me to supervise people of high levels. But I would love to have the chance of supervising very qualified professionals. I think I could do it right. I take the idea with enthusiasm”.

13. Do they habitually come to you for personal problems?
“In the company I work they apply an open doors style, therefore, the personnel know that my doors are open for any consulting or problem, but they also know that my absolute priority is work. They have sometimes come to me, but only when the private problems could interfere with the job”. Or other variations that are related with your personal style of relating with people.

14. How do you train the people in your department?
The methods differ from one person to another. Describe yours. Remember that a good manager is expected to train their people and to form their own back up. The companies don’t need “indispensable” people; on the contrary, they need people that can be replaced by others.

15. Are you attached to rules?
Remember that a manager should manage themselves in a delicate balance with the company’s policies and what everyone thinks they should do. Some of them privilege the strict application of the norms, while others value more their own convictions. What is your style?

16. How do you delegate duties when you have to be absent, on vacations, for example?
Explain your situation; it would be ideal for you to have a good second one who you can delegate to when you go on vacations.

17. Do you think that your area/sector adds value to the company?
If you belong to the commercial area, the answer may be easier for you. But if you work in a service area such as accounts or human resources, you should have your answer prepared. All areas contribute to the general result of a company.

18. What is your supervision style?
Explain how you see yourself with your own words: participating, charismatic, logical, you supervise your people, you control only by objectives, etc.

19. What do you do in order to be a good boss of department?
“I think that in communication, being in some way the vehicle among the dimensions of the highest direction and the personnel I am in charge of. We, as a whole, are responsible for the result we get”.
If it would correspond: “We all know the vision and mission in the company and that helps.”

20. Are you responsible for the promotion of the personnel of your sector?
If so: comment what the management standards are like.
If not: comment what is your degree of development.

At the end of Chapter 5, question 74, we made reference to the role of tutor or mentor that the managers have in certain companies, if that is your case; this is the time to talk about it within your managing abilities.

 

Remember that the best way of showing your managing abilities is not “imagining hypothetical situations” but talking about real situations you have gone through. Keep in mind that we say “real”, this means that you should have effectively made the actions/situations that “show” your managing abilities.
